NOW AVAILABLE ON VIDEO: MURDER IN SUBURBIA (Series 2/BBC America) A little bit of a more sophisticated "Cagney and Lacey", this series boasts Caroline Catz (as Kate "Ash" Ashurst) and Lisa Faulkner (as Emma "Scribbs" Scribbins), a pair of intelligent and witty sleuths, who tackle six mysteries in this two DVD set. With a sense of humor, a sense of style--and a dose of practical down-to Earth and utterly unorthodox abilities, they close every case. *** (Acorn Media/$35.99 on Amazon) MANSTROKEWOMAN (The Complete First Series) From Ash Atalla, the award-winning producer of "The Office" (the original British series spun off into American TV success), comes the first season of this smart sketch comedy that explores every kind of relationship known to man--and some that aren't! Nick Frost ("Shaun of the Dead") is part of a cast of hilarious comedians. This is funny stuff. **1/2 (FreemantleMedia/$24.98) YOGA FOR THE REST OF US: Back Care Basics This features Peggy Cappy who improves upon her previous WGBH-Boston videos and makes Yoga accessible to more people through this effort. It is easily digested in six segments, including leg and back stretches. Peggy also demonstrates how to relax and stretch using household items like chairs, pillows, or a wall. First there was Def Comedy Jam. Then came the Bad Boys of Comedy. Now, this is the funniest stuff yet--pushing the limits of good taste (and sometimes skipping over the line.) Host Doug Williams, Martin Lawrence, and a number of very funny individuals, highlight this two- DVD, six hour highlight reel of humor. *** (STARZ ORIGINALS/$29.98) WARNING: Not for children! POCAHONTAS REVEALED Ok, we remember the history, right? On May 13, 1607, three English sailing vessels dropped anchor beside a small island in the James River, Virginia. On board were 104 colonists who would establish the first successful English settlement in the new world in Jamestown. The exploits of the brash, swashbuckling John Smith; the venerable Native American Chief Powhatan, and his infatuated daughter Pocahontas is part of the myth of a new nation. Now, 400 years later, science investigates history with this great NOVA Special from WGBH Boston Video. This video explores the Native American view of Jamestown for the very first time. ***1/2 (WGBH Boston Video/$19.95) MUST SEE TV! Californication, an "R" rated series on Showtime. Like another of my favorites, Dexter, this show explores a few things not seen before. David Duchovny stars as a horndog guy. Despite critics eviscerating it, I enjoyed this bit of escapism! Add this to my other favorites: HBO's Entourage, Scott Baio's and Danny Bonaduce's reality series. NAZI SECRETS REVEALED (NR) For World War II history buffs, this is a can't miss box. Filled with three separate episodes of PBS's vaunted series NOVA, it features "Hitler's Lost Sub", "Hitler's Sunken Secret", "The Great Escape", "Nazi Prison Escape", and "Decoding Nazi Secrets." History is SO fascinating! **** (WGBH Boston Video/$39.95)

Favorite Martian TV VETERANS JAMI FLOYD AND JACK FORD COURTED AGAIN! Court TV® Taps Floyd and Ford As Daytime Network Anchors New York, NY - January 27, 2005 - Court TV® welcomes back highly respected television veterans Jami Floyd and Jack Ford to the network's roster of daytime anchors, it was announced today by Marlene Dann, Executive Vice President, Daytime Programming for the network. Floyd and Ford, both attorneys, previously "did time" working at Court TV early on in their television journalism careers. Floyd will anchor a new daily program in daytime, and will be joined by Ford two days a week. "We are pleased to welcome back seasoned journalists Jami Floyd and Jack Ford, who have proven their mettle both as anchors and legal news correspondents," said Dann. "They have covered a wide variety of some of the nation's most important legal stories, and the experience they both bring to Court TV will be a wonderful addition to our daytime programming." Floyd first joined Court TV in 1996, where she served as an anchor and correspondent, covering big stories, including the O.J. Simpson trial, the Oklahoma City bombings and several landmark cases involving the tobacco industry. She returns to the cable network straight from ABC News, where she served as a correspondent since 1999, most recently contributing to breaking news reports, as well as long-form coverage for newsmagazines and Nightline. From 1999 to 2001, Floyd served in the ABC News Law & Justice Unit. As the news division's legal correspondent, she contributed to all ABC News broadcasts, including World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, Good Morning America and Nightline.
Ford, who has been recognized with numerous awards, has been a guest anchor on Court TV since June 2004. Prior to that, he served as co-host of the syndicated talk show, Ali & Jack. Previously, Ford was an anchor and correspondent at ABC News for both Good Morning America and 20/20. He was also chief legal correspondent at NBC, and served as an anchor at Court TV from the network's inception in 1991 until 1994. TED TURNER COMPARES FOX NEWS CHANNEL TO ADOLF HITLER Ted Turner called compared the popularity of Fox News Channel with the popularity of Hitler with German voters just prior to World War II. His comments were made publicly during a television convention in Las Vegas this week and documented by Broadcasting & Cable magazine. "While Fox may be the largest news network, it's not the best," Turner said, adding that Fox News is a propaganda tool for the Bush Administration. A Fox News spokesperson, coyly commented, " Ted is understandably bitter having lost his ratings, his network and now his mind -- we wish him well."

Junk
Food News: Entertainment Media 2004 "We are the best entertained least informed society in the world." Neil Postman Project Censored at Sonoma State University in California holds an annual competition to select the top ten most frivolous, over-reported news stories of the year. We call this list Junk Food News because it fills up the American airways and newsstands with celebrity gossip and meaningless coverage of the unimportant. Famous lives provide us with an entertainment rush and a false reality that radiates in comparison to the darkness of war, business fraud, and government repression. This year's selections were voted on by the 200 students, faculty and media researchers who work with Project Censored and hundreds of other people world-wide who are members of our weekly independent news listserv at www.projectcensored.org. The dubious honor of this year's number one Junk Food News story goes to Janet Jackson and her Super Bowl exposure. It shocked our nation - so the corporate media claimed - and set off a Federal Communications Commission tizzy over a nipple. The vulgarity and sleaziness of the rest of the half time show seemed to slither back into the dark without a stir. It seems that a nipple being exposed is more important than the real, life-shattering issues of our nation and world. Coming in at Number 2 is Ben and J. Lo's breakup. They were making news even before they called their relationship off. They graced the covers of magazines and tabloids, and had people waiting anxiously and holding their breaths over what the couple would do next. The "rock" that "Jenny from the block" had sat pretty on her finger for only so long. Even though Ben and J. Lo are over, they have not faded from memory or from corporate news celebrity gossip. At Number 3 are the Hilton sisters. Few people had heard of them before this past year, but now it seems they are everywhere in mainstream media. Paris get the most attention from her sex video to Fox TV's The Simple Life. It seems that many actually do care about a rich girl who doesn't shop in Wal Mart. Britney Spears makes this year's list again, coming in at Number 4 with her marriage to childhood friend Jason Alexander. The two were married on a Saturday in Las Vegas, and had their marriage annulled the next Monday. It seems that every move of Britney's is made done to create attention. The corporate media loves using her to build titillated viewership. Amazingly, Martha Stewart made the top five spot with her ever-present face in our court system. Whether or not Martha was innocent or guilty, this high profile case was dragged out by the media and her products can still be found on the shelves at Kmart. Rounding out the top ten for 2003-4 Junk Food News list are, Britney and Madonna's kiss, Trista and Ryan's Wedding, American Idol, The last episode of Friends, and Ashton and Demi. While there is nothing wrong with enjoying entertainment, there is always an opportunity cost that affects public access to important news stories about the critical issues in our lives. Junk Food News consumes the limited time and space for news stories in the corporate media. Entertainment becomes news. Reality TV is news at 6:00 PM. Project Censored believes that it is crucial to democracy to have a healthy media, a media that is able to inform on critical events and not just serve as a means of diversion. Watch

"NYPD BLUE" WILL RETURN TO THE ABC SCHEDULE AT 10:00 pm. "ONCE AND AGAIN" WILL AIR ON TUESDAYS AT 10:00 THROUGH DECEMBER 28, THEN RETURN ON MONDAY, JANUARY 24 AT 10:00 pm. ABC's hit drama series "NYPD Blue" will return to the schedule Tuesdays at 10:00 p.m on January 11. The January premiere will allow the series to run original episodes through the end of the season as well as allowing "Once and Again" to continue to build its audience through December. "Once and Again," which has received a full season order, will air on Tuesday nights through December 28, and will then return in its new, 10:00 p.m. time slot on Monday, January 24. In making the announcement, Stu Bloomberg, co-chairman of the ABC Entertainment Television Group, stated, "For the past six seasons, ABC has nurtured and supported 'NYPD Blue' as it developed into appointment television for the nation. We see the same potential with 'Once and Again,' and believe this scheduling decision allows us the opportunity to maximize the potential of both series. By holding 'Blue's' premiere, we'll be able to devote additional promotional resources to its launch, and run original episodes of the series throughout the season, without one repeat. And by re-launching 'Once and Again' in January, we'll be able to mount a strategic campaign that not only reintroduces the show to millions of viewers who are already devoted fans, but also spotlights it for those who have yet to experience this incredible series." Since its premiere, the critically lauded "Once and Again" has been a solid ratings performer, and has become the season's highest rated new drama among Adults 18-49. Multiple Emmy-winner "NYPD Blue," now entering its seventh season on ABC, is still one of television's highest rated programs, ranking #3 in Adults 18-49 among all dramas last season. "Once and Again" is executive produced and created by Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick. The one-hour drama series is from The Bedford Falls Company in association with Touchstone Television. "NYPD Blue" is a Steven Bochco Production, co-created by Bochco and Milch, who are executive producers along with Mark Tinker. Former New York City police detective Bill Clark also serves as executive producer. -Story by Mark Snyder Howard
Stern and S Club 7 Howard Stern's new animated series for UPN, Doomsday, won't be his only venture into the non-traditional TV fare. Stern has announced that he plans to do a new show for the Fx Network (a Fox Network) tentatively titled, "Son of A Beach". The show will be about a dimwitted lifeguard, surrounded by scantily clad women, who is a hero. Stern claims he won't play the lead role, but only serve as executive producer. But we shall see. Seems like a role written for him.
The British equivalent of the Monkees, S Club 7, is going to be heading up a new show here in the states. The group, who sold half a million CD's since its June release, will star in the new Fox Family Network show, "S Club 7 in Miami." Series will air Saturday mornings at 11 am starting on November 6th. The show provides an eclectic mix of pop music, comedy, and drama. Makes me think of Mike, Davey, Mickey and Peter TV
NEWS ROUNDUP Fox Family Channel has announced the launch of "Fox Family Afternoon Specials", a new umbrella series of specials that will feature award-winning programs from both "ABC Afterschool Specials" and "CBS School Break Specials". They will be re-introduced on a weekly basis, beginning Sunday November 7th from 2-4 pm. New specials produced and created for Fox Family Channel will join the schedule in Fall of 2000. The first two specials (airing on November 7th) are: "Kids Killing Kids", a drama starring Malcolm Jamal Warner (of the Cosby show). It reveals the consequences of teenagers using guns to solve their problems. Second special is the critically acclaimed "Daddy's Girl", featuring Grammy-award winning singer Lauryn Hill. The story tells the tale of sixteen year old Alicia, who plans a loving reunion to bring the absent father, who left her family ten years ago, back into her life. Some other great specials are included in the package. PMPNetwork.com will keep you informed before they air. Ice Angel, a new movie for Fox Family Channel, has begun filming in Vancouver. The story of a star hockey player, who is accidentally killed and is reincarnated in the body of a 17 year old female skater. It stars Nicholle Tom, Thomas Calabro and Tara Lipinski. Nicholle Tom started her career on "Beverly Hills, 90210" as Sue Scanlon, a troubled teen. She then landed roles on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and the "Beethoven" movies. She also starred in "The Nanny" on ABC-TV. Thomas Calabro played Dr. Michael Mancini on my favorite late night soap, "Melrose Place". (I miss it already). Tara Lipinski is the youngest Olympic, World and National figure skating champion in history. Guest stars making cameo appearances on "Ice Angel" include Olympic medalists Elvis Stojko, Stoneham's Nancy Kerrigan, osalynn Sumners, and Peter Caruthers. Ice Angels is due to air in January, 2000. "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?", ABC-TV's two week experiment featuring Regis Philbin, was a HUGE Success!! Eight of the Ten nights aired were in the top ten in the Nielsen Ratings. Look for this show to be made a semi-regular replacement series at some point mid-season this year. The show not only generated ratings. It's "900 number" generated close to EIGHT MILLION dollars in income for ABC-TV. As
if Pamela Anderson Lee isn't enough reason to
watch the syndicated "V.I.P."
series, guest stars are even more of a
reason. This season will feature cameos by some
of the biggest names in show biz. How does Lee
attract them onto her not-so-great show? YOU figure
it out! Guests this season will include Jay Leno,
Dan Aykroyd, Jerry Springer, George Clooney, Hugh
Hefner, Loni Anderson (a former glamour blonde
herself), Damon Wayons, and a guy named Tommy
Lee. His name sounds familiar.
Party of Five's Neve Campbell gets a new love interest this season. "Julia", who last year experimented with another woman, gets to have an affair with the editor of that books she's been writing. Who plays this editor? None other than Kyle Secor of "Homicide: Life on the Streets".
Biography
series continue to do well. A &
E 's "Biography" series started it all.
"The E! True Hollywood Story" is the
most tabloid of the group. It will air daily starting
in August. VH1's "Behind the Music"
is the best music-related bio show, while MSNBC's
"Time & Again" with Jane Pauley
features old news footage and a neat script. Matt
Lauer, of NBC's "Today" show, will be
hosting a yet-to-be-named bio series this fall
on MSNBC. And if that wasn't enough, A &E
recently announced plans to start an all-biography
cable channel. Cinemax Reel Life has a fascinating documentary airing on Cinemax starting July 26th at 11 PM EST. Titled, "The Brandon Teena Story", it is about a girl who lived her life as a man. She was eventually raped and murdered by two men in her town. The story is as real as it gets, and discusses in depth the problems of those with "gender identity" problems. Brandon's estate's attorney Herb Freedman, was a recent guest on "That's Life with Mark Snyder" John O'Hurley, another "That's Life" guest, is best known as Mr. Peterman on Seinfeld". But he's got a new gig. O'Hurley was named host of "Incredible Animals" on Fox Family Channel. Joe Lando of "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman", will star and CO-executive produce a new drama called "Cliffhangers", on Fox Family Channel. CO-executive producer is Michael Braverman (who won Emmy's for "Life Goes On" and "Chicago Hope").
